Everything You Need to Set up an Emergency Base Camp
Oct 17, 2022
Emergency base camps are needed as a part of any disaster response. FEMA uses them, and the military or National Guard may also need to set up an emergency base camp to aide in emergency response. While these organizations may have some supplies on-hand, they may need to rent locally for others. It’s a good idea to rent from one place that can supply everything or as much as possible of what is needed to set up the emergency base camp.
#1
Event Tents
An event tent is a must for emergency response. They provide spaces to store supplies, defined locations for command and organizations, and places to sleep and eat. Tents can also be used to create temporary medical stations to treat illness and injury amongst those who survived the emergency.
Sidewalls
Renting tents with sidewalls can offer privacy, shelter, and protection as well as a sanitary environment for medical treatments.
#2
Seating, Tables, and Beds
In addition to tents, you’ll also need seating and tables. These are needed for everything from organization to medical treatments to eating and resting. If you’re also providing emergency shelter, you’ll need beds so that both emergency responders and those affected by the emergency will have places to sleep.
#3
Power Generators
In many emergency situations, power may be unavailable. You may need lighting, heating, or the ability to charge mobile devices to aid in communication. All of these things would require electricity. Mobile power generators and the fuel to run them would be necessary to provide the electricity needed until the local power grid can be restored.
#4
Portable Toilets
Having a place to safely use the bathroom is also a must for any emergency base camp. Portable toilets can solve this need, whether they’re individual porta-potties or a rented trailer with stalls and sinks inside. Trailers can be a better option if there are many people who will need to use them, from National Guard members to emergency responders to those impacted by a disaster.
#5
HVAC Systems
Depending on the weather, HVAC systems could be necessary. An emergency can happen at any time of the year in any weather. This means that you may need to provide heating or air conditioning. HVAC units that can run off of generators are a must. If the weather is cold, heating will be needed to keep everyone safe and comfortable. If the temperatures are too hot, air conditioning or at least fans will help to ensure everyone’s well-being.
#6
Mobile Kitchens
In the event of an emergency, chances are good that local restaurants and grocery stores may be unable to provide food. People who live in the area may not be able to access their homes to be able to retrieve even food that doesn’t require preparation. Emergency response therefore should include mobile kitchens that can be used to prepare food for both responders and for those they’re helping.
#7
Signage
It’s important that everyone knows exactly where to go and what is located in each tent. Having signs directing people where they should go and signage labeling the purpose of each tent, especially those with sidewalls, can help people to quickly find where they need to go.
#8
Expert Installation Team
An emergency response team already has enough to deal with in helping those impacted by a disaster. An expert team from the tent rental company can manage setting up the tents so that emergency responders can instead focus on what they do best: helping people. Ideally, the tent installation team should also have experience with PPE, hazmat, CDL, forklifts, and basic first aid so that they can be of the most assistance possible in setting up the tents.
